Chasing Weather

There is beauty in a billowing supercell in the distance, in jagged streaks of lightning and thin, swaying funnels reaching down to the countryside. That’s what is conveyed in Stephen Locke’s photography, not merely the mayhem of a spring or summer storm. Seventeen of the Roeland Park, Kansas, photographer’s arresting images – accompanied by the poetry of former Kansas poet laureate Caryn Mirriam Goldberg – are featured in the new Library exhibition Chasing Weather. It mirrors the coupling of photos and verse in Locke’s and Mirriam-Goldberg’s book Chasing Weather: Tornadoes, Tempests, and Thunderous Skies in Word and Image, published in September 2014. The nearly two-month exhibit is on display in the Central Library’s Genevieve Guldner Gallery.
