How to apply for a job
All Library locations will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 24 and remain closed on Thursday, December 25 in observance of the Christmas holiday.
We accept only applications for specific currently open positions, and we're accepting only applications made through our online system. Each currently open position has a position description page, linked to from our Jobs & Internships page, that contains a link to the electronic application for that position. When a position has closed, it will be removed from the website and no further applications will be accepted.
Our online Application for Employment form must be completely filled out, even if you are also submitting your current resume for a job opening.
Please be sure to carefully read the job description for the position to make sure you are interested in applying and understand the requirements.
If you find that the application system is unavailable when you attempt to apply, we apologize for your inconvenience and encourage you to try again later. If you are having technical problems, please call 816-701-3652.
You are welcome to apply for as many positions as you wish. However, to minimize problems, please close and restart your browser between each application.
Your application will first be prescreened in the Human Resources Department and then forwarded to the hiring supervisor after the position’s closing date. For “open until filled” positions, applications are forwarded to the hiring supervisor after initial processing.
The hiring supervisor will review the applications and select the applicants he or she would like to interview. In most cases, the hiring supervisor schedules the interviews. If you are not selected for an interview, you will receive an email from us.
Because the application review process can be lengthy and cannot begin until after the position’s closing date, a considerable amount of time may pass before you may be contacted by the Kansas City Public Library for an interview or regarding the position status.
The application system allows you to attach a document (such as a cover letter or a resume) to your application. However, only one file can be attached, so if you have more than one document you'll need to combine them into one before attaching. You may attach documents in these formats:
- Microsoft Word, (.doc, docx)
- Web page (.htm or .html)
- Adobe Acrobat (.pdf)
- graphic formats (.gif or .jpg)
- rich text file (.rtf)
- text file (.txt)
- WordPerfect Document (.wpd)
- Microsoft Works Word Processor Document (.wps)
There is also a space provided for you to paste in a text version of your document(s).
When you submit your application, an acknowledgement will be sent to the e-mail address you provided.
We post our job openings on our web site www.kclibrary.org. E-mail inquiries regarding available positions may be sent to: firstname.lastname@example.org. When making an inquiry or submitting a resume, be sure to indicate the position or positions you're interested in. You must be at least 16 years old and have completed the 9th grade to work at the Kansas City Public Library and its branches.
Most of our positions are year-round permanent positions. It is rare that we offer seasonal employment.
