Apply for an internship
Purpose of the Intern Program
Internships exist to benefit the Kansas City Public Library and to facilitate achieving its mission through a mutually beneficial relationship, linking valuable resources (the interns) with an important community institution (the Library) for the benefit, growth and enrichment of both.
Types of Internships
Currently there are internships available in the marketing Department. Central Reference, Access Services, ITS, Outreach and Youth Services departments have also expressed an interest in hosting an intern and a willingness to offer such an opportunity. For more information, contact the Coordinator of Volunteer & Intern Services.
Benefits for the Intern
Interns will acquire career-related benefits that include opportunities to:
- gain professional work experience in one’s chosen career field.
- observe and be mentored by professional staff who could potentially serve as career references.
- gain knowledge of how to conduct oneself in a professional workplace.
- develop project items for one’s work portfolio.
Interns may also receive many of the same benefits that Library volunteers receive, such as free parking at Central Library.
Become an Intern
Intern candidates must complete an internship application form and return it to the Coordinator of Volunteer & Intern Services. An interview will be conducted to ascertain the applicant’s potential fit with the Library’s available intern positions. If the Library is interested in the applicant, an internship will be awarded that best suits the career goals of the candidate.
To become an intern, visit any Library location or call (816) 701-3400, ext. 2404 to request an intern application. You can also download an application form below.
