KMBC Channel 9 Big Read Webcast

KMBC Channel 9 “First News” co-anchor Donna Pitman hosts an interactive webcast discussion of Housekeeping with a panel of local literary experts at the Channel 9 News Desk. Viewers may join in the conversation by e-mailing questions and comments for the panel, which includes: Kelly Miller, Big Read facilitator for the Kansas City Public Library; John Mark Eberhart, information specialist at the Johnson County Library; and Nancy Cervetti, literature professor at Avila University.

The webcast takes place on the KMBC website at kmbc.com. PC viewers should use either Windows Vista or Windows XP SP2, while Mac users should use OS 10.4.8, along with the following web browsers: Internet Explorer 6 (or higher), Mozilla Firefox 2.0 (or higher), or Apple Safari 3.1 (or higher).

Donna Pitman is a native of Independence, Mo., whose work at KMBC has been recognized by the Kansas City Press Club. She serves on the Permanent Memorial Day Committee in Kansas City and supports the Truman Library through volunteer efforts.

Kansas City Public Library director Crosby Kemper III leads this book group discussion of the enduring modern American classic Housekeeping, which is among his favorite novels. This book group discussion is open to all and takes place in the Large Meeting Room on the main level of the Plaza Branch.

A Park University panel composed of professors and students leads this examination of the novel in light of the literary tradition of transcendentalism and ongoing debates about postmodern literature. Feminist theory, new criticism, and psychoanalytic theory will be applied to the text, and following a formal presentation, the audience will be invited to discuss and interact with the theories and ideas presented.
