We Need Your Help: Tell Congress to Save Library Funding!

The recently proposed White House budget calls for eliminating or making drastic cuts to many agencies and organizations that work directly with the Kansas City Public Library to create the free programming, classes, activities, and services we offer.

Those Library partners include:
  • Institute of Museum & Library Services (IMLS), the only federal agency solely dedicated to supporting the nation's hundreds of thousands of libraries and museums.
  • National Endowment for the Arts
  • National Endowment for the Humanities
  • Corporation for National and Community Service, AmeriCorps
  • Corporation for Public Broadcasting

The Kansas City Public Library needs your help to ensure that these agencies are saved as they provide the community and financial support necessary for many of the services we offer. Without libraries, our community members, especially children, will not have the resources and support they need to succeed in school and prepare for college, careers, and life.

If any of these agencies lose funding, it will affect these programs at the Library:
  • Kansas City Digital Media Lab
  • Summer Reading program
  • Big Read, the community-wide reading event
  • Our Missouri Valley Sundays speaker series
  • Refugee & Immigrant Services & Empowerment (RISE), which organizes citizenship preparation classes and naturalization ceremonies
  • Outreach services that work with patrons who are homeless
  • Kids Café, which provides free meals for children
  • Tabletop gaming
  • Books for Babies

Losing just one of these services would have a significant lasting impact on community members, regardless of age, gender, or race.

Here's what you can do right now:

Hello, my name is ____________________.  As a voter and as a member/supporter of public libraries, I’m calling to ask the Senator/Representative to oppose the elimination of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and all the federal agencies that fund, promote, and strengthen our public libraries as the White House budget is proposing to do.  Libraries help children, students, and adults from all walks of life succeed in school and prepare for college careers and life. Libraries depend on funding from these agencies to provide needed services and resources for these citizens, especially those from low-income families. Please take action to ensure that these agencies are not eliminated and that they get the funding they need.  [IF YOU LIKE, SHARE A BRIEF EXAMPLE OF HOW YOUR LIBRARY HELPS Community – kids, teens, adults].  Thank you for your time.
