Every year Fortune magazine produces a list of the largest 500 companies in the United States. The Kansas City metro area is home to three companies on the Fortune 500 list for 2009. These companies are:

- YRC Worldwide—ranked 293
- Embarq—ranked 405
If you extend the list to the top 1000 companies as ranked by revenues the list grows longer and includes:
- Seaboard—ranked 531
- H&R Block—ranked 556
- Interstate Bakeries—ranked 718
- AMC Entertainment—ranked 777
- Great Plains Energy—ranked 816
- DST—ranked 825
- Ferrellgas Partners—ranked 824
- Inergy—ranked 935
- Kansas City Southern—ranked 948
Collectively these companies had revenues of $67,324,100,000.
