The inaugural exhibit of the Orval Hixon gallery, Shooting Stars: The Celebrity Photography of Orval Hixon, is now on display at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The exhibit features images of some of Hixon's most famous celebrity subjects, including Theda Bara, Al Jolson, and Kansas Citian Joan Crawford.

Nosotras: Portraits of Latinas, a collection of 50 photographs documenting the lives and culture of Latina immigrants in the United States, is on display.

Nosotras, Spanish for the feminine "us" or "we," was organized by Virginia Dodier, a photography historian and a Mexican-American born on the border and raised in the American West. She, like many other Hispanic women and girls, has experienced the feeling of living in two worlds.

School-Age Children looking for another way to improve their reading skills are invited to register for a 20 minute session reading one-on-one with Hero and his trainer, Heddie Leger.

Every third Saturday throughout the school year, children who already know how to read will have the opportunity to practice and improve their reading skills in this unique and non-threatening learning environment.

Bring your favorite book to share with Hero, the dog who loves to listen.

The Kansas City Public Library celebrates Black History Month with The Movies We Love: The Most Romantic Black Movies (Ever) as selected by Fox 4 News Film Critic Shawn Edwards on Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. throughout February 2010 in the Stanley H.
