The inaugural exhibit of the Orval Hixon gallery, Shooting Stars: The Celebrity Photography of Orval Hixon, is now on display at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The exhibit features images of some of Hixon's most famous celebrity subjects, including Theda Bara, Al Jolson, and Kansas Citian Joan Crawford.

Color in Freedom, an exhibit by Joseph Holston, is on display June 5 – August 1, 2010, at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Color in Freedom features 49 paintings, representing his interpretation of the Underground Railroad and the journey hundreds of people living in slavery took to gain their freedom in the North.

An exhibit documenting the history of Bunce Island, a key base of operations for European slave merchants in Sierra Leone, will be on display starting Saturday, June 12, at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

The exhibit, Bunce Island: A British Slave Castle in Sierra Leone tells the story of slave trading venture located off the coast of West Africa.  From this site, traders sent nearly 30,000 African captives to the Americas between 1670 and 1807.

YOUth Fringe Festival kicks off at Plaza during Friday Night Family Fun and then continues on Saturday for a full day of activities.

Both Friday and Saturday's events will include music, dance, and magic with performers that include City in Motion Dance Theater, Barstow Theater, and the Society of Youth Magicians. Saturday's activities will also feature youth films, a special fashion show, and a special appearance by teen singer Jamie Amber Lynn.

Local historian Erik Stafford leads a presentation called Literacy & the Black Experience on Saturday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m. at the L.H. Bluford Library, 3050 Prospect Ave.
