Four award-winning children’s authors are joining forces at the Kansas City Public Library for a program of the Author Reader's Theatre that adapts their popular books for dramatic presentation.

Participating in the event on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St. are:

* Brian Selznick, winner of the Caldecott Medal in 2008 for his groundbreaking picture book novel, The Invention of Hugo Cabret, (which director Martin Scorsese made into the 2011 film, Hugo).

* Richard Peck, winner of the 2001 Newbery Medal for A Year Down Yonder, the Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction in 2004, and a National Humanities Medal in 2001.

*Sarah Weeks, winner of the William Allen White Award whose bestselling PIE is currently a 2013-14 Mark Twain Award nominee.

*Avi, winner of the Newbery Medal in 2003 for Crispin: The Cross of Lead.

The evening is part of the Library’s Friday Night Family Fun series and this event is for ages 10 and up only.

Authors Readers Theatre (ART) was founded in 2006 by children’s authors Avi, Sharon Creech, Walter Dean Myers, and Sarah Weeks. The troupe has since expanded to include many other authors.

ART follows the tradition of readers/actors standing on stage and reading from prepared scripts. There are no costumes or props, merely voices to transport the audience into the text. The authors refashion their own writing into theatrical scenes, each running about 10 minutes. All four authors appear in each scene.

Admission is free. RSVP at kclibrary.org or call 816.701.3407.

This event is presented in cooperation with Reading Reptile. Books will be available for purchase during the event.

A workshop focusing on the use of children’s literature in reader’s theatre will be held on Thursday, May 2, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St. The workshop is idea for educators and theatre professionals, but it is open to the public. Reservations are required for the workshop. Please call Crystal Faris at 816.701.3513 for more information or to secure your spot.
