Chang-rae Lee: The Surrendered

Award-winning novelist Chang-rae Lee discusses his new novel The Surrendered, a spellbinding story of how love and war echo through an entire lifetime, on Thursday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

The book has been called a profound meditation on the nature of heroism and sacrifice, the power of love, and the possibilities for mercy, salvation, and surrendering oneself to another.

Lee emigrated to the United States with his parents when he was three years old. His first novel, Native Speaker, earned him the PEN/Hemingway Award.

Lee teaches at Princeton University, where he has served as the director of Princeton’s Program in Creating Writing.

The event is the final installment of the 2009-2010 Writers at Work series organized by Kansas City novelist Whitney Terrell and co-sponsored by Chris Davis and the UMKC English Department.

Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the events. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to RSVP. Free parking is available in the Library District parking garage at 10th & Baltimore.

Copies of The Surrendered will be available for sale, and Lee will sign copies purchased during the event.
