Kansas City’s Shane W. Evans, who has earned national acclaim as the illustrator of more than two dozen children’s books, will discuss his latest work, Chocolate Me!, at the Kansas City Public Library’s Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., on Saturday, December 7, 2013, at 2 p.m.

Evans teamed on the new book with actor and first-time children’s author Taye Diggs, who drew from his own childhood experiences. Chocolate Me! tells the story of a young boy who feels different – teased by other kids because his skin is darker and his hair curlier than theirs. With the help of his mother, he comes to realize how beautiful he really is.

“With its universal themes of wanting to fit in, self-acceptance, and self-esteem,” the School Library Journal says, “this read-aloud offering is sure to strike a chord with many young readers/listeners, and on a variety of subjects, not just race.”

Evans, a graduate of Syracuse University and winner of the 2012 Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award, has illustrated a series of children's books featuring basketball greats Shaquille O'Neal and Magic Johnson. He also illustrated Osceola: Memories of a Sharecropper's Daughter, which received both a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award and the Orbis Pictus Honor Book Award for nonfiction.

As part of his presentation at the Plaza Branch, Evans will debut a documentary – or “chocolatementary,” as he and Diggs call it – detailing their Chocolate Me! collaboration.

Admission is free.
