At Ease with Opera

The Lyric Opera Guild speaker Morton Creditor presents a talk titled Why Operatic Heroines Cough So Much and Other Melodic Medical Mysteries on Monday, September 8, at 7 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

The presentation is part of the Guild’s At Ease with Opera series, a program designed to educate and entertain both newcomers to the world of opera and long-time fans.

Creditor, emeritus professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine and an avid opera fan, will discuss the various diseases leading to tragic conditions for lovers and others, which have inspired operatic treatment. Audio and video samples will be provided.

Creditor’s talk will focus heavily on two of the Kansas City Lyric Opera’s upcoming productions: Puccini’s La Bohème in September 2008 and Verdi’s La Traviata in March 2009.

Giacomo Puccini’s La Bohème has been inspiring theater goers for more than 100 years with its glorious melodies and eternal story of starving Bohemians and star-crossed lovers in the Latin quarter of Paris.

The Kansas City Lyric Opera will perform La Bohème on September 13, 15, 17, 19, and 21.

Admission is free, but reservations are recommended. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to indicate your interest in attending.
