The seventh season of the Library’s Script-in-Hand performances concludes with a special Mother’s Day performance of the musical I Do! I Do! presented by the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre.

I Do! I Do! features book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, who created The Fantasticks, the longest running production in the history of American theater (42 years). It is a musical adaptation of Jan de Hartog's play The Fourposter, a two-character story that spans 50 years in a marriage. The action takes place entirely in the couple's bedroom, which is dominated by a large fourposter bed.

I Do! I Do! opened on Broadway in 1966. Mary Martin (Peter Pan) and Robert Preston (The Music Man) starred. The show ran for two years and 560 performances. It received Tony Award nominations for best musical and best lyricist and composer; Preston was named best leading actor in a musical.

MET recently was notified that its performance rights to Dreamgirls had been withdrawn. Publishers of plays and musicals sometimes will prohibit local performances of a work, particularly if they might compete with other productions. Currently a national tour of Dreamgirls is underway.

Support for this series is provided by an Anonymous Donor with additional support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. Co-sponsored by the Women’s Center at UMKC.
