I Want the Wide American Earth: An Asian Pacific American Story

Asian and Pacific Americans make up more than 5 percent of the U.S. population – over 17 million people – and those numbers are growing. In the first exhibition of its kind, the Smithsonian Institution explores how Asian Pacific Americans have shaped and been shaped by our nation’s history. Compelling, often surprising, the exhibit takes a sweeping look at their story – from the first Asian immigrants to their place in key moments in America’s history: panning during the Gold Rush, hammering ties along the Transcontinental Railroad, and fighting on both sides in the Civil War. I Want the Wide American Earth was created by the Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center and is supported by a grant from the W. K. Kellogg Foundation.
