Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jane Smiley presents her first book for young readers, The Georges and the Jewels.

The author of A Thousand Acres and more than 10 other works of fiction, Smiley’s latest offering is a stirring novel set on a California horse ranch in the 1960s. It revolves around Abby Lovitt, a seventh grader who has always been more at ease with horses than with people. Her father, who calls all the mares “Jewel” and all the geldings “George,” warns her not to get attached to the animals. But with all the stress at school at the hands of bullies and problems at home, Abby seeks refuge with the Georges and the Jewels.
