Immigrant Experience in America

Award-winning author Joseph O’Neill discusses his new novel Netherland on Tuesday, September 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the Truman Forum at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Set in post-9/11 New York City, Netherland is the story of Hans van den Broek. Left alone after his English wife and son return to London, van den Broek stumbles upon the vibrant New York subculture of cricket. Thanks to a friendship with a charismatic and charming Trinidadian named Chuck Ramkissoon, van den Broek begins to reconnect with his life and his adopted country. As the two share their vastly different experiences of contemporary immigrant life in America, an unforgettable portrait emerges of an “other” New York populated by immigrants and strivers of every race and nationality.

O’Neill was born in Ireland and grew up in Holland. His previous books include the novels This Is the Life and The Breezes and the nonfiction book Blood-Dark Track, a family history centered on the mysterious imprisonment of both his grandfathers during World War II, which was a New York Times Notable Book.

O’Neill’s new novel surged in popularity this spring when President Barack Obama told the New York Times Magazine he had grown tired of briefing books and had been spending his evenings with Netherland.

The event is co-sponsored by Rainy Day Books. Copies of Netherland will be available for sale, and the author will sign copies purchased during the event.
