Daniel Day-Lewis won his first Oscar for best actor for playing Christy Brown, the Irish artist who was born with cerebral palsy but learned to paint and write using his left foot – the only limb he could control. A supporting actress Oscar went to Brenda Fricker, who played his mother. Directed by Jim Sheridan; with Fiona Shaw.
