To many filmgoers, Sam Shepard is the Gary Cooper of his generation – tall, taciturn, a man of few words. But before his film career as an actor as well as a screenwriter and director, Shepard was considered a pre-eminent American playwright, known for creating scathing comedies and dramas that bent the rules of what you could, or should, depict onstage.
