Sandra Cisneros: The House on Mango Street

On Thursday, April 16, at 7 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St., award-winning author Sandra Cisneros visits to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of her classic The House on Mango Street.

An internationally known poet, novelist, and short story writer, Cisneros has been prolific in penning such books as Bad Boys, My Wicked Wicked Ways, Loose Woman, Woman Hollering Creek and Other Stories, Hairs/Pelitos, and Caramelo. Along the way, she has garnered numerous awards and accolades including notable book awards from The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Chicago Tribune, and The Seattle Times, as well as the PEN Center West Award for Best Fiction, the Mountains & Plains Booksellers’ Award, and the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Fellowship to name a few.

But it is The House on Mango Street that put Cisneros on the international literary map. The short coming-of-age story of young Esperanza Cordero’s quest for a better life beyond the Chicago barrio and the importance of her promise to come back for the ones she left behind has sold over two million copies to date. First published in the early 1980s, the book won the Before Columbus Foundation’s American Book Award and is required reading in many middle schools, high schools, and universities across the country.

The Cisneros presentation is co-sponsored by the Latino Writers Collective. Rainy Day Books will be on hand to sell copies of her books.

Admission is free. Click here or call 816.701.3407 to RSVP. A 6:30 p.m. reception precedes the event. Free parking is available in the Library District Parking Garage located at 10th and Baltimore.
