Saturdays at Central: Alex Shum

Renowned musician Alex Shum leads his group, the Brookside String Quartet, in a performance of classic holiday songs on Saturday, December 6, at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Shum, a member of the Kansas City Symphony and the Kansas City Chamber Orchestra, has won the Carmel Chamber Music Competition and was a Leonard Bernstein Fellow. He leads a distinguished group of musicians including violinist Anne-Marie Brown, violist Kent Brauninger, and cellist Yeonsun Joo.
Brown, a graduate of Northwestern University and the Manhattan School of Music, joined the Kansas City Symphony in 2001. She was a concertmistress of the New World Symphony in Florida and first violin for the Orchestra’s string quartet. Brauninger, also skilled as a mandolinist, teaches Suzuki violin at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Yeonsun Joo serves as the associate principal cellist of the Kansas City Symphony. As a soloist, she has performed with orchestras such as the Philadelphia Orchestra, the KBS (Korean National Broadcasting System) Orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic, and the World Symphony.
Shum’s performance is part of the Saturdays at Central children’s program series, celebrating the new Children’s Library at the Central Library.
