The people of China have been celebrating the Chinese New Year since ancient times. It remains one of the country’s most important and celebrated holidays.

Please join us at the Plaza Library to celebrate the Year of the Dog!

The 2018 Chinese New Year starts on Friday, February 16th, but the Plaza Library festivities are scheduled for Saturday, February 17th

Activities will include:

  • A Lion Dance Performance
  • Kung Fu and Tai Chi demonstrations
  • Calligraphy and Painting Lessons
  • Meet the Dogs of the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City
  • Enjoy a taste of New Year Dumplings provided by Bo Lings Chinese Restaurant 
  • and much more

Stop by the Bluford Library every Saturday for a variety of board games, card games, and strategy and adventure games. Look through our board game collection, and suggest new games for us to get! Staff will be on hand to help you learn the rules and organize matches.

Representatives from Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) will be on hand to assist with your federal and state (MO and KS) income tax returns.

Walk-ins only. The first to arrive will fill the available slots for the day at each location.

This service is available to individuals making $60,000 per year or less.

Library staff are NOT tax experts.  All questions are to go through the IRS at 1-800-829-1040.

Before visiting a VITA volunteer, see Publication 3676-B for a list of services provided and check out the IRS What to Bring page to ensure you have all the required documents and information the volunteers will need to help you.

Please bring the following items:
  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Social Security cards or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse and dependents (Proof of foreign status, if applying for an ITIN)
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse and dependents
  • Wage and earning statements (Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R,1099-Misc) from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • All 1095 Forms, Health Insurance Statements Health Insurance Exemption Certificate, if received
  • A copy of last year’s federal and state returns, if available
  • Direct deposit and/or banking information
  • Proof of daycare expenses with provider name, address and ID number
  • Copies of income transcripts from IRS and state, if applicable

To file taxes electronically on a married-filing-joint tax return, both spouses must be present to sign the required forms.

• Writing English (correctly write one out of three Naturalization Test sentences)

Join local gardener Corinna West who will demonstrate the process of tapping a tree and making your own delicious syrup. This class explores the technique of tree tapping, collection, storage, cooking methods for syrup, and an overview of common household items and supplies that are used in the process of syrup-making. Class will last approximately one hour.
