Hixon transformed the field of portrait photography in Kansas City and the surrounding region during a career that spanned more than seven decades. His studios—the first in the Brady Building at 11th and Main Streets, and the second just one block west in the Baltimore Hotel—welcomed thousands of patrons throughout the 1910s and 1920s.

Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and Missouri in-service training clock hours will be granted for attending the Early Literacy Symposium.

The Library’s third annual symposium — a day of direction and support for parents, teachers, civic leaders, and others with a stake in children’s futures — features early literacy experts and practical approaches to early learning.

This book sale will feature nearly 2500 items priced from 50¢ to $1. Sale items include children’s books at every reading level, youth audiobooks, DVDs, and CDs. There will be a small selection of new and vintage books available for $5 each.

All proceeds support services and programs at the Kansas City Public Library.

Throughout 2014, the Kansas City Public Library recreates the movie going experience enjoyed by audiences 75 years earlier. Each week, the free series Hollywood’s Greatest Year will present a movie from 1939.

The Kansas City Public Library is hosting Money Smart Month programs across multiple Library locations during April 2014.

The Library will waive up to $30 in overdue fines and fees for any Kansas City Public Library cardholder who attends one or more of these Money Smart Month events.

Join University of Kansas instructor and choreographer Anjali Tata-Hudson and members of the Asian-Indian community for an afternoon of Indian poetry, live and recorded music, dance, visual art, and personal narratives. Following the presentations, sample a variety of Indian cuisine.

The program and post-event reception are presented by the Vox Narro project, which pairs writers and immigrant groups in presenting the cultural traditions and stories of immigrant communities. Vox Narro is supported by the Rocket Grants program, which is funded by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and administered by the Charlotte Street Foundation and the Spencer Museum of Art in support of innovative, public-oriented work in nontraditional spaces.
