A gathering of needleworks enthusiasts! This group meets every Thursday except for the 5th Thursday of the month and works on all kinds of needlework projects (knitting, rug hooking, crochet, applique, needlepoint, embroidery, etc.) No instruction is provided. Just bring a project and have fun!

The 15th Annual Kansas City Storytelling Celebration offers folk tales, multicultural stories, and animal stories, songs, and rhymes.

Opening the evening is a Friday Night Family Fun concert at 6:30 p.m. in the Kids’ Corner with LaRita Wright and Rosie Best-Cutrer. All ages are welcome.

It’s followed by a ghost-tales session at 7 p.m. in the Truman Forum Auditorium featuring four visiting storytellers: Lyn Ford, known for her “Affrilachian” tales; singing storyteller Anthony Clark; bilingual Carrie Sue Ayvar; and Antonio Rocha, a native Brazilian whose career spans nearly three decades and six continents. Appropriate for ages 13 and up.

The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) literacy program uses therapy animals to improve children's reading and communication skills. Join the R.E.A.D. team at the Waldo Branch the second Saturday each month between September 2014 and April 2015 (excluding December and January) as children read the pooches some prose. Children may sign up for a 10-minute slot each Saturday. Parents must sign a release form before children will be allowed to read with one of the dogs.

Children in kindergarten through eighth grade are encouraged to tap their creative energies and create masterpieces at Westport Center for the Arts’ “Kids Team Up for Art” Workshops at the Kansas City Public Libraries. For artists age 5-14; friends and families of any age welcome!
