Hixon transformed the field of portrait photography in Kansas City and the surrounding region during a career that spanned more than seven decades. His studios—the first in the Brady Building at 11th and Main Streets, and the second just one block west in the Baltimore Hotel—welcomed thousands of patrons throughout the 1910s and 1920s.

For more than a century, the Kansas City Stockyards fed a nation hungry for fresh meat. The heyday of the stockyards is long gone, undermined by flood, environmental concerns, and shifting economics. But this powerful financial engine is celebrated in Cowtown: History of the Kansas City Stockyards, a new exhibition of photographs, blueprints, drawings, and documents culled from more than 5,000 items retrieved from a Livestock Exchange Building storeroom in 2008.

An offshoot of KC FilmFest’s annual Reel Spirit youth film competition, this all-day family event screens award-winning shorts and a free family feature and offers interactive filmmaking workshops on important storytelling principles.

Making a special appearance is Hallmark Cards artist and head of character development Pedro Martin, who works with the animated hoops&yoyo characters and created Asteroid Andy. He discusses and shows clips of his work, including the conception of new Hallmark character Penny Paperheart, and introduces the animated movie hoops&yoyo’s Haunted Halloween.

This workshop will focus on many aspects of theater including improv, movement, C.R.O.W. (Character Relationship Objective Where), story telling, literature, basic theater terms, team building, voice, imagination and most important, having fun!

This workshop will not be performance focused. There is no “final performance” at the end of the four week session, so if you can’t make every session don’t worry! Youth can earn DIY badges after the workshop.

Throughout 2014, the Kansas City Public Library recreates the movie going experience enjoyed by audiences 75 years earlier. Each week, the free series Hollywood’s Greatest Year will present a movie from 1939.
