Friends of the Library & volunteers

The Friends of the Library plays a valuable role in making your Library one of the best in the nation. Mindful that the Library's revenues have been affected by the economic downturn, the Friends of the Library has agreed to discontinue offering free DVDs as a benefit of membership for its new and renewing members. This change was initiated by the Library due to budgetary concerns. Not offering free DVDs will bring at least some additional revenue to the Library.

The Library and the Friends continue to work closely to build membership, increase volunteering and advocacy, and promote book sales to support excellence in service. We appreciate your membership and your support.

Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library is a non-profit volunteer group dedicated to promoting the Kansas City Public Library's programs and activities by providing resources and support to the library system and the community it serves.

Basic Membership $25

  • Invitations to Script-in-Hand receptions

Basic Plus Membership $40

  • All the benefits of Basic Membership for two individuals living at the same address

Contributor Membership $100

  • All the benefits of Basic Plus Membership, plus
  • An invitation to a select Library event

  • All the benefits of the Contributor Membership, plus
  • Two invitations to a select Library event

Special events

Become an important part of our Library’s brilliant future and at the same time help to preserve its glorious past. Meet authors and other noted personalities. The Friends have opportunities to volunteer at special programs throughout the year.

On the first Saturday of every month this summer in the City Market, 400 Grand St., Kansas City, MO, the Friends of the Library will hold a series of book sales on the North Walkway next to the Steamboat Arabia. Book sales will continue through October.

The books range in price from $0.50 to $5.00 and cover many genres.
