Unlike telephone directories, city directories are very specific to the boundaries of the city or county covered. So, though a person, business, etc. may have been in a metropolitan
area (Kansas City, for example), one must know in which political subdivision that person, business, etc. was located (Raytown, for example) in order to utilize the appropriate city directory. Many of the city directories in the Special Collections Department are on microfilm.
