Kansas City Public Library is seeking an energetic and creative Youth Services Librarian. Reporting to the Director of Youth & Family Engagement, this librarian will have a home base at the North-East Branch.
This position provides youth programming and services (ages 0-18 as well as for the adults who support youth) both at the branch and through outreach into neighborhood child care centers, schools, and other youth-serving organizations. Other responsibilities include readers’ advisory, reference, collection maintenance, creating and posting content to the Library’s youth services website and social media sites, and participation in system-wide programs for youth. A passion for youth development, reading, and learning are vital, as is an understanding of informal learning principles and engaging youth in informal learning activities. An ability to work effectively with youth from diverse backgrounds is essential.
Minimum requirements include a Masters degree in Library Science, a Masters degree in a field related to Social Work or Counseling, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have excellent customer service skills; knowledge of library service and literature for children and teens; excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to organize work effectively; and intermediate computer skills. Fluency in English required; fluency in Spanish and/or Somali welcomed. Full-time. Normal work schedule: M-F with occasional Saturdays and one evening a week. $41,035 per year plus excellent benefits. Position open until filled.
