Area artist Hugh Merrill discusses his exhibit, Divergent Consistencies II, on display in the Guldner and North galleries at the Central Library.

Merrill’s drawings are influenced by many cultural and visual references that include industry, commerce, and architecture. He describes his mixed media works as “floating in an uncertain void, disconnected from social, scientific, and mythical realities that sustain belief.”

The Kansas City Branch of the English-Speaking Union will hold its 27th annual Shakespeare Competition on Sunday, February 27, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St. Students from 10 area schools will compete for first place in a competition designed to develop students’ speaking and critical thinking skills, as well as their appreciation of literature, as they explore the timeless themes in Shakespeare’s works.
