SYNOPSIS: In Chapter One, readers are introduced to Tom Sawyer in mid-mischief making – though his Aunty Polly is almost immediately onto him. Aunt Polly anticipates Tom’s playing hookey from school and promises to make him work that next day as punishment. Readers also meet Sid, the goody two-shoes half-brother to Tom. Before this chapter closes, Tom finds himself in a skirmish with a boy newly arrived in the village of St. Petersburg – but will he emerge victorious?
