12th Annual Kansas City Storytelling Celebration

The Kansas City Public Library hosts a number of events as part of the 12th Annual Kansas City Storytelling Celebration. A series of nationally recognized and regional artists perform preschool story time programs, family concerts, and workshops for both children and adults at selected branches.


Featured storytellers include: Gene Tagaban, Native American performing artist; Leeny Del Seamonds, award-winning Latina storyteller; Dan Keding, storyteller, author, and folk musician; and Loretta Washington, African American storyteller.

Events for the week-long celebrations are as follows:

Wednesday, November 2, 2011:

Preschool Story Time

Waldo Branch, 201 E. 75th St.

Storytelling Concerts  

Program: 10:30 a.m.  Central Library, 14 W. 10th St

Program: 1 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Gene Tagaban, Native American performing artist, presents a story program for elementary school-aged audiences. His performances feature stories woven through with song and dance. The stories range from Trickster Tales, to creations stories, to personal tales, to stories about his grandmother.

Friday Night Family Fun

Program: 6:30 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Mike and Nancy Micham honed their skills telling stories and singing traditional folk music at Silver Dollar City. They will present a family program full of stories, song, and lots of laughter.

Friday Night Ghost Story Concert

Program: 7 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Come prepared to be scared. Leeny Del Seamonds, Gene Tagaban, Dan Keding, and Loretta Washington will haunt your evening with stories infused with ghosts and mayhem and terrifying specters. Not intended for the faint of heart - or for children under 10 years of age.

Saturday, November 5, 2011:

Storytelling Workshop for Children and Teens

Program: 1 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Multi award-winning, internationally known storyteller, Leeny Del Seamonds, presents a creative dramatics/basic acting workshop designed for students. Bring spoken words alive and expand skills in drama, storytelling, oral reports, and performance poetry. Through a series of skill-building exercises, theatre games and improvisations, students explore the fundamentals of oral presentation, acting, and self-expression to enhance communication, verbal presentation, and word interpretation. Be prepared to move, challenge yourself and have FUN!

Storytelling Workshop for Adults

Program: 1 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Dan Keding, storyteller of international acclaim, is well known for his telling of traditional world folktales, personal narratives of his boyhood in Chicago, ghost stories and dark tales, and superbly crafted original pieces. Keding will present a beginning storytelling workshop for adults interested in honing their skills in telling stories to children. Librarians, parents, beginning tellers, family tellers and anyone interested in the art of storytelling is encouraged to attend.

Family Concert

Program: 2:30 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Dan Keding, Loretta Washington, Gene Tagaban and Leeny Del Seamonds will perform stories for a family audience.

Youth Concert

Program: 3:30 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

After polishing their skills at the storytelling workshop, youth ages 8-18 are encouraged to come put their new skills to the test by telling a story of their own (those who can't attend the workshop are encouraged to come for the telling).

Storytelling Spectacular

Program: 7:00 p.m.  Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Kansas City Storytelling Celebration concludes with a concert featuring acclaimed storytellers Gene Tagaban, Leeny Del Seamonds, Loretta Washington and Dan Keding. Come hear stories from around the world told by masterful tellers. For ages 10 and up.
