Civic Leader Edward T. Matheny Jr. Discusses The History of Kansas City's Southwest High School

Civic leader Edward T. Matheny Jr., who graduated from SouthwestHigh School in 1940, takes a fond, but critical, look at his alma mater on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

"Every son and every daughter bears thy hallowed name; far above all others,

always thou shall bring us fame. Southwest! Southwest!"

So goes the SouthwestHigh School alma mater.

Its glory days long past, Southwest today reflects the sad state of affairs in the Kansas City (Missouri) School District. Matheny - author of two books on the history of SouthwestHigh School, The Rise and Fall of Excellence and Once More with Feeling - discusses the school's proud past, its troubled present, and its hopeful future.

This presentation is part of the Missouri Valley Sundays series, a program of the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Central Library. The series is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Admission is free. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
