All Library locations will be closed on Monday, May 30, for Memorial Day.
September 16, 2011
Columnist and political commentator John Avlon discusses his new book Deadline Artists: America's Greatest Newspaper Columns on Thursday, September 22, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Deadline Artists is a celebration of the American newspaper column. It includes columns by several masters of the craft, including: H.L. Mencken, Ernie Pyle, Murray Kempton, Jimmy Breslin, and Mike Royko. It also includes columns written by public figures, including one by Theodore Roosevelt that appeared in The Kansas City Star.
At a time of great transition in the news media, when obituaries for newspapers are being written every day, Deadline Artists makes the case for the continued relevance of opinion journalism.
During his Library appearance, Avlon will discuss many of the columns included in the book and will share his views on the future of American newspapers and the American newspaper column.
Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
This event is co-sponsored by the Truman Library Institute.
