The Kansas City Public Library will be one of the scheduled stops on the The Wimpy Kid Ice Cream Truck Tour, Friday, August 14 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Waldo Branch, 201 E. 75th St. The tour is to promote Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, the fourth book in the New York Times best-selling series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, by Jeff Kinney.
Kinney, a thirty-something Maryland native created a comic strip during college and hoped to continue his dream of being a cartoonist after he graduated. With the failure to have his comic strip syndicated, he then crafted the idea for Diary of a Wimpy Kid in 1998. Six years later he was publishing installments of his new idea on Funbrain.com. The online version became a success with more than 80 million hits to date.
Then, in 2006, Kinney signed a multi-book deal with Harry N. Abrams to turn his online creation into a print series. The series includes: Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Last Straw. The latest addition, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, will be available on October 12, 2009.
Abrams Publishing will provide FREE ice cream treats and hand out bookmarks during the event. Copies of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series will be available for checkout.
