Film Expert David Thomson Discusses Career of Director Michael Powell
at Kansas City Public Library

In conjunction with True Brits: The British Film Series, film expert David Thomson shares his personal and critical perspective on seminal filmmaker and friend Michael Powell on Tuesday, October 14, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Along with his frequent collaborator Emeric Pressburger, Powell directed a series of cinematic masterpieces – including the film-school standard Peeping Tom – that have influenced prominent American directors like Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, and Wes Anderson. Thomson describes Powell as a sublime yet devious and essential director whose work educated audiences as much as filmmakers.

Described by the Atlantic Monthly as “the greatest living film critic and historian,” Thomson’s appearance is in conjunction with the release of his new book Have You Seen…? A Personal Introduction to 1,000 Films, a generous history of film and enticing critical appraisal written with equal parts humor, passion, and historical knowledge. Not content to choose only his personal favorite films, Thomson offers a list that will surprise and delight readers.

Rainy Day Books will be on hand to sell copies of Thomson’s books. The author will sign copies purchased during the event.

Admission is free. Call 816.701.3407 to indicate your interest in attending or RSVP online. Free parking is available in the Library District Parking Garage at 10th and Baltimore.
