Filmmaker Gary Jenkins Reveals Secrets of the Missouri/Kansas Underground Railroad
August 13, 2012
In the years leading up to and during the Civil War, the Underground Railroad along the Kansas-Missouri border was busy taking runaway slaves to freedom in the north.
Area filmmaker Gary Jenkins enlightens and entertains with little-known stories of the exciting journey to freedom through Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Iowa in Secrets of the Missouri/Kansas Underground Railroad on Saturday, September 8, 2012, at 2 p.m. at the Westport Branch, 118 Westport Rd.
He illustrates his talk with clips from his recent documentary film Freedom Seekers: Stories from the Western Underground Railroad, which debuted at the library last February.
Jenkins is a local attorney whose previous films include a documentary on the Kansas City Free Health Clinic and Negroes to Hire about slavery in Missouri.
This event is part of an ongoing series of Saturday presentations sponsored by the Westport Historical Society.
Admission is free.
