Former Royals Catcher Jason Kendall, Kansas City Star's Lee Judge Discuss Throwback, Their Inside Look at Big League Baseball

Jason Kendall knows baseball inside and out. Emphasis on the inside.

The former Kansas City Royals catcher, one of the big leagues' hardest-nosed players over a career that spanned 15 seasons and five different teams, has delivered a behind-the-scenes look at the Grand Old Game, co-writing Throwback: A Big-League Catcher Tells How the Game Is Really Played with The Kansas City Star's Lee Judge.

They will participate in a public conversation about the new book on Thursday, June 19, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

Throwback is an insider's guide to baseball's nuances and strategies, spiced with Kendall's keen and pointed observations and storytelling. There's the game everybody sees. And there's the game within the game that fans in the stands don't see or often fail to notice - the superstitions; the subtle, anything-for-an-edge strategies; the players' mind games (at which Kendall was a master).

The authors take you on the field, into the dugout, and behind the closed doors of a major league clubhouse.

Kendall was a three-time major league all-star who started his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates and went on to play with the Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, and Milwaukee Brewers before retiring with the Royals in 2012. He has remained with the Royals as a special assignment coach.

Judge is the longtime editorial cartoonist for The Star and writes a popular baseball blog, Judging the Royals, for the newspaper's website.

Admission to event is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes it. RSVP at kclibrary.orgor call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available in the Library District parking garage at 10th & Baltimore.
