I Do! I Do! Replaces Dreamgirls as the Final Offering Of the 2013 Script-in-Hand Series

The musical I Do! I Do! will close this year's Script-in-Hand series, replacing the previously announced Dreamgirls.

I Do! I Do! will be performed by the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.

MET recently was notified that its performance rights to Dreamgirls had been withdrawn.Publishers of plays and musicals sometimes will prohibit local performances of a work, particularly if they might compete with other productions. Currently a national tour of Dreamgirls is underway.

I Do! I Do! features book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, who created The Fantasticks, the longest running production in the history of American theater (42 years).

It is a musical adaptation of Jan de Hartog's play The Fourposter, a two-character story that spans 50 years in a marriage. The action takes place entirely in the couple's bedroom, which is dominated by a large fourposter bed.

I Do! I Do! opened on Broadway in 1966. Mary Martin (Peter Pan) and Robert Preston (The Music Man) starred. The show ran for two years and 560 performances. It received Tony Award nominations for best musical and best lyricist and composer; Preston was named best leading actor in a musical.

The 2013 Script-in-Hand series is funded by an Anonymous Donor with additional support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The series is co-sponsored by the Women's Center at UMKC. A public reception following each performance is sponsored by the Friends of the Kansas City Public Library.

Admission is free. RSVP at kclibrary.org or call 816.701.3407.
