The Kansas City Public Library Adds to Its Collection of Online Audiobooks and E-books

No time to check out a Library book? Let the Library—or more precisely, 3,000 titles, come to you.

The Kansas City Public Library expands its online collection of audiobooks and e-books for adults, teens, and children that Library card holders may download to their personal computers or devices. Eclectic titles include many fiction genres, such as mysteries, romance, and historical fiction, as well as a range of nonfiction titles from biography to foreign language learning.

The new service, from Overdrive®, is in addition to the current digital collection provided by NetLibrary®.

Library customers may download up to ten titles at a time. At the end of the three-week lending period, titles expire automatically, so there’s never a book to return or a late fee. Customers may also place titles on hold and receive an e-mail notice when the item is available.

“Overdrive® audiobooks and e-books are another online Library resource, like our research databases, that’s available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week,” said Pat Mulsoff, director of collection development. “Customers on the go can get the reading or listening format that they want, when they want it.”

Library customers may download books to their computer or other compatible device, such as a portable media player. Some files, depending on publisher permissions, can be saved to a recordable CD for later use.

E-books require the free Adobe Acrobat Reader® or Adobe Digital Additions® for Windows® or Apple® computers.

To listen to audiobooks on a PC, two free software programs are needed, both available online: Overdrive® Media Console and Windows Media Player® (9 Series or newer). Extensive instructions are available at http://kclibrary.lib.overdrive.com. Microsoft® Zune® devices are also supported.

Audiobooks are also available as MP3s for Apple® devices, such as the iPod® and iPhone® (but not for the iPod® Shuffle).
