The Kansas City Public Library and Reading Reptile Host Turning the Page: Building a Community of Readers with Jon Scieszka

The Kansas City Public Library hosts former National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature, Jon Scieszka, on Monday, September 26, 2011, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St., to talk about the latest additions to  his Trucktown and Spaceheadz series, and suggest how to help the Joplin, Missouri schools by contributing to the Turning the Page: Building a Community of Readers campaign.

Scieszka is the author of the True Story of the Three Little Pigs and The Stinky Cheese Man and many other books that make kids want to read. His Trucktown series is for preschool/kindergarten kids and comes in more shapes, sizes, and formats than you can shake a bumper at! This rough and tumble, boisterous series has the very best that children’s books have to offer under its hood with kid appeal and a strong literary core.

Spaceheadz is a book and multimedia series.  The series is about aliens who invade the earth by landing in a fifth grade classroom and impersonating students. Their leader takes on the most powerful form on earth, the class hamster.  The aliens believe that television is reality and that if they don’t sign up 3,400,001 Spaceheadz the Earth will be turned off!

Scieszka and Brian Selznick, a second children’s author and Caldecott Medal winner, who will visit Kansas City on October 5, 2011, are part of the Turning the Page: Building a Community of Readers campaign. The campaign goal is to create 22 fully-stocked portable classroom libraries for two grade schools in Joplin, Missouri, where school buildings were destroyed during the May 22, 2011, tornado.

Turning the Page: Building a Community of Readers was created and is being administered as a joint effort by the Kansas City Public Library and the Reading Reptile. Partners include Hallmark Cards and the Kansas City Woodworkers Guild, and the Joplin School District's Bright Futures Initiative. Check out the www.readingreptile.com for more information about the Turning the Page campaign.

Admission to the event is free. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407.

A percentage of the evening’s book sales will be donated to the Joplin schools by Reading Reptile.
