At 5:41 p.m. on May 22, 2011, a massive EF-5 tornado reached Joplin, Missouri, devastating the community and ultimately killing 159 people and injuring countless others.
Reporters Eric Adler and Laura Bauer of The Kansas City Star discuss Joplin 5:41 When A Monster Storm Shattered a Missouri Town but Didn't Break its Spirit, a new book chronicling the newspaper's coverage of the devastating tornado, on Sunday, October 9, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Adler and Bauer were The Star's lead reporters on the story immediately after the storm and throughout the initial stages of the rebuilding process.
The book features extraordinary images, compelling graphics and the award-winning work of The Star's reporting staff and seeks not just to chronicle the destruction but to celebrate the heroic efforts of Joplin residents and the thousands of volunteers who rushed to the scene to begin the healing.
All royalties from sales of the book go to the Joplin Recovery Fund.
The event is co-sponsored by Kansas City Star Books.
Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
