The book follows the life of teacher Nathaniel O'Connell, who thought he knew how to survive at the low-income, ethnically diverse, inner-city school. But a run-in with three students who know how to inflict pain, both physical and emotional, leaves him fighting for his reputation, his job, his family, and his very survival.
