Lock. Pop. Drop. Library's Off-the-Wall Film Series Screens 1984's Breakin'
All Library locations will close at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, November 25, and remain closed all day on Thursday, November 26, for Thanksgiving.
June 11, 2014
Plotwise, the 1984 film Breakin' is typical, hey-kids-let's-put-on-a-show material.
Then, there's the soundtrack - and the fact that this 90-minute, lock-pop-and-drop classic lent millions their introduction to hip-hop culture and music.
Continuing its 2014 Off-the-Wall Film Series - 1984: Rave New World - in partnership with The Pitch - the Library screens Breakin' on Friday, June 20, 2014, at 8:45 p.m. on the Rooftop Terrace of the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
The movie revolves around a struggling jazz dancer (Lucinda Dickey) who finds inspiration on the streets through the moves of Adolfo "Shabba-Do" Quinones and Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers. It also features Ice-T, playing a rapping emcee in his movie debut, and drew a 74% audience approval rating as calculated by the Rotten Tomatoes website.
But there's more to the evening than that. The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City screens an original short to kick off each Off-The-Wall program. KC Bier Company offers each attendee two free samples of its locally brewed ales and lagers.
And the Milwaukee Delicatessen Company at 9th and Baltimore, across the street from the Central Library, offers discounted meals and drinks through the My Pitch Deals program. Visit mypitchdeals.com to purchase half-price certificates redeemable before and after each Off-the-Wall event.
The series, which runs through the summer and early fall, features musically themed films from 1984. It kicked off in May with Footloose, and moves on the next three months to Purple Rain (July 18), Repo Man (August 15), and Stop Making Sense (September 19).
Admission is free. RSVP at kclibrary.org or call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available in the Library District Parking Garage at 10th and Baltimore.
Though the Central Library closes at 5 p.m., doors reopen at 8 p.m. for Off-the-Wall audiences. Attendees are invited to bring blankets and folding chairs. Helzberg Auditorium, adjacent to the Rooftop Terrace, provides overflow seating or shelter in the event of inclement weather.
