The Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre Returns For a Seventh Edition of the Sunday Script-in-Hand Series

Playwright Wendy Wasserstein (1950-2006) became the voice of an entire generation of women who came of age in the 1960s.

Her masterwork, The Heidi Chronicles, is presented by the Metropolitan Ensemble Theatre on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 2 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

The performance is part of the seventh season of the Kansas City Public Library's Script-in-Hand series Women of the Years: The Second Season offers plays performed script-in-hand style by some of Kansas City's best actors.

The Heidi Chronicles follows its intelligent, well-educated heroine from college through a career as an art historian. But Heidi is less sure of herself when it comes to men. Though regarded as a seminal work of feminist theater, when Heidi debuted in 1988 it was criticized by some women for the negative comments about the women's movement voiced by Wasserstein's male characters.

Among the actresses who portrayed Heidi in its original Broadway run were Joan Allen, Christine Lahti, Brooke Adams, and Mary McDonnell. Jamie Lee Curtis played the role in a 1995 TV adaptation.

The 2013 Script-in-Hand series is funded by an Anonymous Donor with additional support from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The series is co-sponsored by the Women's Center at UMKC. The public reception following each performance is sponsored by the Friends of the Kansas City Public Library.
