New Letters' Angela Elam Holds a Conversation With Charles Baxter, Author of Feast of Love and Gryphon

In Gryphon: New and Selected Stories, author Charles Baxter offers a career-spanning collection of yarns in which our acutely observed reality is rocked by the exotic, the surreal, and the author's comic-melancholic world view.

Now Baxter -- whose novel The Feast of Love was a National Book Award finalist and became a feature film starring Morgan Freeman and Greg Kinnear -- discusses his work with New Letters on the Air host Angela Elamon Monday, October 21, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Baxter is a novelist (First Light, The Soul Thief, The Feast of Love); a short story author and essayist (Harmony of the World, A Relative Stranger, Burning Down the House: Essays on Fiction); and poet (Imaginary Paintings, The South Dakota Guidebook, Chameleon).

For many years he directed the Creative Writing MFA program at the University of Michigan's graduate program in creative writing. He currently teaches at the University of Minnesota and in the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College in Ashville, N.C.

The Writers at Work series is organized by University of Missouri-Kansas City Writer-in-Residence Whitney Terrell and is co-sponsored by the Writers at Work Round Table, the Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair at UMKC, and the UMKC English Department.

Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event. RSVP at kclibrary.org or call 816.701.3407.
