New Readers and Local Writers Celebrate the Joy of Literacy
September 5, 2012
An estimated 225,000 adults in Kansas City cannot read. They are denied some of the simplest and most important moments in life - from reading a bedtime story to a child to filling out a job application.
To celebrate the joy of literacy and the efforts of individuals who have learned to read as adults, The Writers Place and Literacy Kansas City present the fourth annual The Power of Reading: A Celebration of the Written Word on Thursday, September 13, 2012, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.
KCPT-TV's Nick Haines will host the event. Adult students from Literacy Kansas City will share heartfelt personal stories of how learning to read has transformed their lives. Local writers Miguel Morales, Kay Saunders, Lisa Harkrader, and Yael T. Abouhalkah will read personal stories and original works that demonstrate the power of reading in their lives.
This event is co-sponsored by the The Writers Place and Literacy Kansas City.
Admission is free. A 6 p.m. reception precedes the event. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407.
