Reporter and author Brian Burnes and Katz family descendant Steve Katz launch their new book The Kings of Cut-Rate: The Very American Story of Isaac and Michael Katz on Sunday, October 30, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.
An overwhelming response from the community came after the newspaper's call for memories, stories, and anecdotes about this Kansas City and Midwest retail icon. The book traces the history of the family-owned stores that grew from two cigar stands downtown to a chain of superstores.
Katz Drug Company, known for its catchy advertising slogans, extensive inventory, and cut-rate prices, redefined "drug store" and became a part of the region's shared memory.
This presentation is part of the Missouri Valley Speakers Series, a program of the Missouri Valley Special Collections at the Central Library. The series is made possible in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Admission is free. RSVP online or call 816.701.3407. Free parking is available at the Library District Parking Garage at 10th & Baltimore.
