What is "Good Taste"? Damon Talbott Seeks Answers Through the Life and Posthumous Career of Duncan Hines

During his lifetime Duncan Hines was a respected restaurant critic.
After his death he became the namesake of a line of cake mixes.
Author and educator Damon Talbott uses Hines' story to examine the idea of "good taste" in From Famous Critic to Faceless Brand: The Life and Legacy of Duncan Hines on Sunday, April 7, 2013, at 2 p.m. at the Central Library, 14 W. 10th St.
Talbott illustrates how taste is neither an object to acquire nor a state of being to achieve, but instead an ongoing process, a temporary association of things considered "good." Taste is both a term for a physical feeling and aesthetic judgment; recent research has shown that taste is a curious intertwining of these two senses. This process is made possible by the interactions of technology, commerce, and media that form the relationships that make society and, in turn, make sense of taste.
Talbott is the Sias Graduate Fellow at the Hall Center for the Humanities at the University Kansas. He is the author of "Recommended by Duncan Hines": Automobility, Authority and American Gastronomy and Bodies and Culture.
