What Works In Urban Education Series Features the Founder of Teach For America, Wendy Kopp

Tom Bloch and the University Academy have joined the Kansas City Public Library to host a series of thought-provoking presentations by national experts titled What Works in Urban Education.

Teach For America Founder and Chief Executive Wendy Kopp discusses her book One Day, All Children: The Unlikely Triumph of Teach For America and What I Learned Along the Way on Tuesday, April 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the Plaza Branch, 4801 Main St.

Kopp proposed the creation of Teach For America in her undergraduate senior thesis in 1989 and has spent the last 19 years working to sustain and grow the organization. In this current school year, more than 6,200 corps members are teaching in America’s neediest communities, reaching approximately 400,000 students. The members join more than 14,000 Teach For America alumni who, still in their 20s and 30s, are already assuming significant leadership roles in education and social reform.

Under Kopp’s leadership, Teach For America is in the midst of an effort to grow while maximizing the impact of corps members and alumni as a force for short and long-term change. Kopp is also the chief executive of Teach For All, which supports the development of Teach For America’s model in other countries.

In sharing the remarkable story of Teach For America, One Day, All Children has been described as “a blueprint for the new civil rights movement – a movement that demands educational access and opportunity for all American children.”

Free copies of Kopp’s book One Day, All Children will be available for the first 100 people to arrive for the event.

Admission is free. Call 816.701.3407 to indicate your interest in attending or you may RSVP online.
