[3] As drama, Act of Valor [4] is no great shakes. But as a docudrama of how America’s most elite fighting force goes about its dangerous business, it's pretty awesome - as authentic a recreation of covert action as we’ll ever see on a movie screen.
[6] For fans of sword-and-sorcery fiction, John Carter [7] has long been a sort of cinematic Holy Grail. Now it's here, courtesy of Disney. It’s got eye candy out the wazoo, but it's a leaden thing marked by an embarrassingly inadequate lead performance.
[9] The Artist [10], French filmmaker Michel Hazanavicius’ daring update on silent movies, is wildly creative, often quite funny, extremely well acted, and peppered with philosophical implications.
[12] Nora Ephron [13] - essayist, novelist, and filmmaker - died June 26 at age 71. She leaves behind some hugely enjoyable films. Here are a few choice ones that can be found in the library’s collection.
[15] KC native Paul Rudd is Hollywood’s go-to guy for off-the-cuff hilarity. He’s at it again in Wanderlust [16], a dork-among-the-hippies comedy. In fact, Rudd is the main reason to check it out.
