Point Break  is the film that put director Kathryn Bigelow on the map. It’s a crime melodrama fashioned to capitalize on the hunkish qualities of Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves and to deliver a full plate of action thrills.
Paul Newman should have won an Oscar for his work in The Verdict . Typically, he was an impossibly handsome, disarmingly charming screen presence. But as ambulance-chasing Boston lawyer Frank Galvin, he played against type and the results were spectacular.
First Monday in October  is less about a woman breaking into an all-male bastion than about the philosophical conflicts that exist within the Supreme Court and their effect on the legal decisions that the rest of us must live with.
Mike Nichols’ The Graduate  is one of those touchstone movies. You never forget the first time you saw it. But I’m not sure The Graduate I saw more than 40 years ago is the same Graduate I watch today on DVD...because I’m no longer the same person.
